Despite modern advancements in maritime safety, accidents at sea do still happen. The resulting mitigation of those crisis situations and the safety of the passengers is very much dependent on the training and the actions of the crew during the crisis. Passenger ships carry a very large number of people, so it is vital for crew to have an understanding and an ability to assist passengers in any emergency situation; to control passengers in staircases, corridors and passages; to use procedures for preventing panic and other irrational behaviour; and to communicate with, instruct and inform passengers.
About the Course:
STCW 2010 Code calls for crew to follow approved training in crisis management and human behaviour, with the training focused on applied psychology for competent assessment of both passenger and crew reactions. Crew must have the following knowledge and competency:
Masters, officers, ratings and other personnel, who are required to be trained in crowd management, crisis management and human behaviour and passenger safety, cargo safety and hull integrity should, at intervals not exceeding five (5) years, undertake appropriate refresher training or be required to provide evidence of having achieved the required standard of competence within the previous five (5) years.
This course sets out the responsibilities and competencies of crew members assigned immediate responsibility for the safety of passengers in emergency situations on passenger ships, as mandated in STCW Chapter V, relating to passenger ship crisis management and human behaviour.
Amendments to the STCW Convention and the STCW Code set a new requirement for training and emergency familiarisation of crew members on passenger ships, effective from July 1, 2018. It is particularly required that all personnel should undergo relevant training before being assigned to shipboard duties.
The course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for the training & qualification of all masters, officers and other crew that are required to manage crisis situations on board passenger ships, as specified in section A-V/2, paragraph 3 and table A-V/2-2 of the STCW Code. This course is developed in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Model Course 1.42 (2018 Edition)
The course lasts for approximately six (6) hours depending on the learner’s abilities and reading speed. However, you can enter and exit this course as often as you require but you must complete the final assessments in one sitting as they will reset if you exit during an assessment phase. Please note that this course covers the theory part only of the full training, and any physical drills must be conducted when joining your vessel under the supervision of the relevant crew and / or staff.
